Janet was born near Conquest, NY on September 12, 1936, a daughter to Roy O'Neil and Ruth McMillen O'Neil.

She played several instruments, including guitar, mandolin, bass, and autoharp.
After getting divorced from her first husband, she married Richard Johnson on June 12, 1965.
When they married, Janet already had 8 children.
After they married, they moved into the house they built on the hill above where Dick grew up. This is the house in April, 1966.

After her husband died in May, 2005, the home they had built together in the country became too isolated for her, and she then moved to Adams street in Jamestown, where she would be closer to her friends.
After they got married, her son Chris (Kit) and his wife Pam invited Janet to live with them, so she sold her house on Adams street, they built a new apartment in their walk-out basement.

At the end, Janet's health deteriorated quickly, but Evie was able to come, and she spent her final weeks surrounded by family who loved her.
